Philanthropist James Dondero Makes A Difference In Dallas

As president of Highland Capital Management, L.P., an alternative investment management firm, James Dondero has the privilege of being able to direct the Dallas-based firm’s donations to local charities. Highland Capital partnered with philanthropic experts The Dallas Foundation to help manage the firms $3 million annual philanthropic budget. Dondero has said that he is interested in effective giving; his interests lie in helping the Dallas community’s education, healthcare and veterans organizations. Highland Capital has helped veterans who need additional assistance beyond the G.I. Bill who want to attend UC Santa Barbara. Additionally, the alternative investment firm supports the Landlord Liaison program, which assists veterans with housing assistance to prevent then from becoming homeless.

Both Highland Capital Management and James Dondero have made major contributions to the Perot Museum of Science and Nature, and the Center for Brain Health, the George W. Bush Presidential Library and the Dallas Zoo. There is a new hippo habitat at the Dallas Zoo called the Highland Capital Lodge. Besides being a philanthropist and president of an investment management firm, Dondero is the chairman of NexBank Capital, CCS Medical, Inc. and Cornerstone Healthcare Group Holding. After graduating from the University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce, Dondero’s career began with an analyst position at JP Morgan. He has also worked for American Express and Protective Life before co-founding Highland Capital in 1993, which is one of the leading alternative investment firms in the world.
