Veteran TV Producer Randy Douthit Still Driving Hard
You would think that producing TV’s “Judy Justice” would be enough of an adrenaline rush. But veteran producer Randy Douthit takes every opportunity in his free time to head to his favorite California track to race cars.
Douthit has a weakness for Ferraris. He attends Ferrari’s driving school almost every year.
That dedication is the same he’s shown in his 9-to-5 job. These days he’s behind the Amazon show “Judy Justice,” starring real-life retired judge Judy Sheindlin.
If that name sounds familiar, it’s because she first shot to fame with another show Douthit produced, the mega hit “Judge Judy.” That’s right, Douthit is responsible for all the time you spent watching afternoon TV when you should have been doing your homework.
Older generations have Randy Douthit to thank for his work on the longtime CNN primetime success “Larry King Live.” King’s talkfest was a quiet oasis in the sea of confrontation that has become opinionated news programming.
Part of the legacy of combative shows can be traced to “Crossfire.” The landmark program featured political pundits with opposing points of view. Their aggressiveness was rare for the time.
It was one of the programs that marked the end of an era of generally gentil discussions of the pros and cons of social issues.
And yes, behind the scenes of “Crossfire” was a young Randy Douthit.
With a television curriculum vitae that seems to be the broadcast equivalent of Ferrari’s racing history, you’d think Douthit would have had enough excitement. But he says that racing gives him a thrill unlike any other.
He reveals that he still gets nervous when he gets behind the wheel despite racing since high school. However, the nervousness soon fades.
After all, even racing a Ferrari couldn’t be as intimidating as Judy Justice.
