Colcom Foundation Working to Curb Population Growth, Preserve Natural Environment

The success of the human species in multiplying itself to now more than 8 billion people on the planet has come at the cost of forcing to extinction many of the beautiful creatures that once shared our Earth.

The Pittsburg-based Colcom Foundation has been sounding the alarm about overpopulation since the mid-1990s and has been pouring funding into projects that seek to mitigate the negative effects of overpopulation.

To make more room for ever more people, other species of animal are necessarily crowded out. Their habitats are destroyed, the freshwater they rely on is either polluted or diverted, vast tracks of forest land are cleared, more land is forced into desertification and so forth.

Scientists point out that our planet is currently undergoing its Sixth Mass Extinction over its billions-year history. The first five extinctions were caused by natural disasters or sudden shifts in global climate conditions – but the current extinction is being caused by mankind itself.

The Colcom Foundation believes that to keep doing “business as usual” is not sustainable. That means not sustainable for millions of animals but also for the human species. Every living organism on the Earth must cooperate to survive and thrive. Scientists now understand that all life is comprised of a complex interconnected web.

One of the efforts put forward by the Colcom Foundation is to support educational and family planning efforts. The bottom line is that each couple must limit the number of children they bring into the world. With 8 billion people needing to be fed, the times of families choosing to bear 5, 10 or even more children each is not tenable.

The Colcom Foundation is also placing resources into creating nature preserves and natural environments where commercial development is not allowed to pave over areas that many animal species rely upon to survive.
