Justin Nelson: Bridging Tufts University and JP Morgan

Justin Nelson’s journey from a Tufts University undergraduate to a leading figure at JP Morgan
is one of dedication and initiative. Graduating in 1998 with a degree in
chemistry and economics, Justin Nelson first entered
the finance world through a summer internship at JP Morgan as a web developer.
This opportunity, secured through personal contacts rather than on-campus
recruiting, was the beginning of a significant career trajectory.

Upon completing his studies, Nelson accepted a full-time position at JP Morgan, eventually advancing to become a managing director in
the asset management division. His passion for finance and commitment to
excellence did not go unnoticed, and his rise within the firm was marked by a
series of significant contributions.

Recognizing the scarcity of on-campus recruitment opportunities for his alma mater, Nelson took
it upon himself to change the narrative for Tufts students. In 2006, he
initiated efforts to make Tufts University one of JP Morgan’s core schools for
recruiting. This involved traveling to the university, collecting résumés, and
personally meeting with students—efforts that he initially funded out of his own pocket.

Over the years, these endeavors bore fruit. Justin Nelson’s initiative led to an increase in internship and
employment opportunities for Tufts graduates at JP Morgan. By 2009, Tufts was
officially designated a core school for the firm. Thanks to Nelson’s efforts,
20 Tufts graduates have since secured internships or full-time positions at JP Morgan.

One notable beneficiary of Nelson’s program is Jon Trott, a 2010 graduate who secured a
summer internship at JP Morgan during the aftermath of the financial crisis.
This internship transitioned into a full-time role, showcasing the tangible impact of Nelson’s work.

Today, a strong network of Tufts alumni exists at JP Morgan, actively participating in
recruiting efforts and supporting new graduates. Nelson continues to advocate
for Tufts students, encouraging other alumni to do the same. His work has not
only opened doors to a prestigious firm but also strengthened the bond between
Tufts University and JP Morgan. Like this page on Facebook, for more information.
