Ben Roethlisberger: Elite Athlete, Committed Family Man And Generous Philanthropist
When most people hear the name Ben Roethlisberger, football comes to mind. And with good reason. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound quarterback was a star in high school, college and the NFL. But for a growing number of people in Ohio, where Big Ben was born and in Pittsburg where he played professionally, the Roethlisberger Family Foundation has provided a wide range of resources for building their families and communities. The foundation offers, seminars, courses, books, videos and even a father-son retreat near his home to encourage outdoor activities designed to bring families together in nature.
An Amazing Athlete
While attending Finley High School, Ben Roethlisberger was a star on the football, baseball and basketball teams. He was captain of all three teams and selected as all-district as well as all-league athlete. But it was in football that he earned a scholarship to Miami University (Ohio)).
In his senior year, Ben Roethlisberger had set state records in football: 4,041 passing yards, 54 throwing touchdowns and 7 rushing touchdowns. Big Ben was the starting quarterback for three years between 2001 and 2003.
He played 38 games and set almost two dozen passing records. They included 854 passes, 10,829 yards and 84 touchdowns.
An NFL Star
In 2004, Ben Roethlisberger was drafted as the Pittsburg Steelers first round pick, the 11th overall. He went on to win Offensive Rookie of the Year. Big Ben spent the next 17 years as the Steelers’ starting quarterback. During that time the team appeared in three Super Bowls and won two of them. Over his career, Roethlisberger appeared in 216 games, completed 4,616 and amassed 56,194 yard and scored 363 touchdowns. He led the NFL in passing twice and was voted to 6 Pro Bowls. Rig Ben has had what many people consider a Hall of Fame worthy career. See this article for additional information.
