Alliance Defending Freedom insights
Alliance Defending Freedom is a legal organization of Christians, who are primarily lawyers and other professionals, who advocate for people’s right to live out their faith in all aspects of life freely. The institution started in 1994 with one lawyer and has grown into a nationwide organization with 4000 allied attorneys trained and supported by headquarters staff.
The organization calls itself a legal ministry because its efforts are to “formulate and advance religious liberty, the sanctity of human life, and related public policy issues to ensure that people of all faiths have the right and opportunity to freely live out their faith.” The group’s legal services are free.
The central core values of the organization are:
- Religious Freedom
The organization’s main initiative is to promote the freedom of people to live out their faith as they see it. This goes against the current movement in many places to restrict people’s freedom to believe and act on their beliefs if those beliefs are not following the mainstream culture.
One of ADF’s most important initiatives is the Religious Liberty Defense Fund (RLDF). This fund provides financial support for individuals whose religious freedoms are denied or threatened by government action or inaction.
- Freedom of speech
Alliance Defending Freedom advocates for the freedom of all people who wish to speak and write, including those with unpopular religious views. The organization does not support laws that would restrict the freedom of speech of others or prohibit activities like anti-discrimination ordinances and certain types of speech codes.
- Sanctity of Human Life
The organization supports laws that protect the sanctity of human life from the moment of conception. This includes opposition to the abortion pill and other birth control methods and opposing legislation that would legalize abortion by making it legal for unmarried women to have abortions if certain conditions are met. The organization also opposes any social or legal program that would encourage or enable others to engage in behavior that would harm human life.
- Parental Rights
The organization opposes laws that would restrict or interfere with the rights of parents to raise their children how they see fit.
- Life and Marriage
Alliance Defending Freedom supports laws that support traditional marriage as defined in the Bible, which includes all unions between one man and one woman. It also opposes laws that redefine marriage to allow same-sex unions, which it considers contrary to God’s plan for marriage.
