Alliance Defending Freedom
Alliance Defending Freedom is an American Christian organization that restructures law. It does this by providing legal assistance for the members of religious groups or other people through the First Amendment.
ADF was founded by 18 evangelical Christians in 1994 and has, as of 2017, a team of 525 staff members throughout North America, Europe and Africa. The affiliated attorneys have won many significant cases at both state and federal level courts, notably ones surrounding religious freedom, such as Hosanna-Tabor v EEOC, which resulted in a unanimous Supreme Court decision allowing churches to hire ministers according to their procedures rather than be governed by U.S. anti-discrimination law Title VII.
“ADF’s public interest work in the courts advances individual liberties, the sanctity of life, and religious freedom for people from all walks of life. We believe that every human being has inherent dignity and worth, regardless of age or stage of development. Alliance Defending Freedom legal activities seek to preserve the freedoms our Constitution and laws guarantee us, including speech, religion, press, assembly, association, and legal process.”
CEO Michael Farris leads the organization
Alliance Defending Freedom was founded in 1994 by a group of politically conservative Christian attorneys concerned about what they saw as the increasing marginalization of traditional Christianity in American public life. The organization was initially known as Alliance Defense Fund.
In the wake of the Jim and Tammy Bakker scandal, they formed an organization to defend their rights in the public sphere. ADF went on to win significant cases at state and federal level courts, notably ones surrounding religious freedom, such as Hosanna-Tabor v EEOC, which resulted in a unanimous Supreme Court decision allowing churches to hire ministers according to their procedures rather than be governed by U.S. anti-discrimination law Title VII.
Alliance Defending Freedom website says that winning cases before the U.S. Supreme Court is a top priority for the organization: “Our lawyers are working hard to protect religious liberty nationwide. See this page for more information.
