Gino Pozzo
Gino Pozzo is from an Italian family that owns three football clubs: Udinese of Italy, Granada of Spain, and Watford of England. In 2011, the Pozzo family purchased a majority share in Watford Football Club. Gino joined the club’s board of directors and became chairman after his father, Giampaolo Pozzo, took over as club president. Gino was instrumental in transforming Watford from a struggling lower-division side to an established Premier League club. He did this by changing their playing style from survival to attack-minded football, which became known as The Hornets Way.
Under Gino’s leadership, Watford rose three tiers in the English Football League: from the fourth division to the Premier League in five seasons (2010–15). In his first season, he replaced manager Malky Mackay with ex-Chelsea assistant manager Gianfranco Zola. He also opened a new Watford FC training facility the first of its kind at a British football club and purchased its training ground. That year, Watford finished 13th and earned a spot in the promotion playoffs.
Gino Pozzo has expanded the front office’s business operations and transformed Watford from a primarily fan-run club into one of the most financially sound in the Premier League. In his first season, he helped Watford generate a lot of revenue, a record in the top division. He is credited with securing the Premier League television rights in Watford’s favor. The club’s commercial and sponsorship revenue has increased yearly since he took over.
Gino Pozzo has installed a new global scouting network to identify new talent and negotiated with the Chinese company Dalian Wanda to open a new stadium. He also arranged for his sister, Maria Pozzo, to oversee the club’s media and promotions. In April 2017, Gino announced that he would be leaving Watford at the end of the season. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Gino said that he inherited a no-hoper and turned it into a club that was punching above its weight.
