These days it isn’t hard to realize that climate disaster seems imminent. While it can be easy to just give up and get depressed over it, there is hope. Many organizations are working hard every day to save the planet and human civilization. One of these organizations is the Colcom Foundation, founded in 1996 by Cordelia S. May.

The Problem

There are many problems that the Earth is facing these days, but they can be roughly divided into two categories: overpopulation and environmental destruction.

Overpopulation – The Earth has a finite number of resources and as the population continues to explode, it’s only a matter of time before there aren’t enough to go around. Overpopulation also leads to the next problem, since the bigger the population, the more resources must be extracted from the planet.

Environmental Destruction – To provide resources to the growing population and to line their own pockets with gold, big companies are rapidly destroying the environment. Problems like topsoil loss, ocean acidification, and climate change are rapidly progressing in the wrong direction and it could spell disaster for us all.

The Solution

The Colcom Foundation carries on Cordelia S. May’s legacy in fighting against these existential crises facing the human race. To do this, they are engaging in a variety of ecological preservation activities with organizations such as Westmoreland Land Trust and Tree Pittsburgh.

To combat overpopulation, the Colcom Foundation is helping spread education about family planning and birth control. Colcom Foundation also advocate for better immigration policies to help curb the population boom in America and the growing ratio of older Americans to younger Americans.
