Justin Nelson: Paving New Paths for Tufts Students at JP Morgan

When Justin Nelson graduated from Tufts University in 1998, he had little guidance on how to
secure a role in the finance industry. Despite earning a degree in chemistry
and economics, Justin Nelson found his path through personal connections, landing
an internship at JP Morgan as a web developer. Upon graduation, he was offered
a full-time position, eventually growing into a managing director role in the
asset management division.

Nelson’s journey at JP Morgan inspired him to open similar doors for Tufts students. In 2006, he
initiated efforts to make Tufts a core school for JP Morgan’s asset management
group, a title given to institutions where the firm actively recruits. His mission
was clear: to provide Tufts students with the opportunities he had to find on his own.

Initially, Nelson’s efforts were met with modest results. He handled all logistics personally, from
travel arrangements to meetings with students. Despite the lack of immediate
support from JP Morgan Private Bank, Nelson’s persistence paid off. Over time, he began
attracting more interest and was able to place several Tufts students in
internships and full-time roles. By 2009, thanks to Nelson’s dedication, Tufts
was officially recognized as a core school by JP Morgan.

One notable success story is Jon Trott, a 2010 economics graduate who secured an internship at JP
Morgan during the challenging post-financial crisis period. Trott’s internship
eventually led to a full-time position, a testament to the doors Nelson helped to open.

Justin Nelson’s contributions have gone beyond individual placements. He has fostered a
robust network of Tufts alumni at JP Morgan, who now assist in recruiting and
mentoring current students. His efforts have strengthened the relationship
between Tufts and the financial sector, benefiting both his alma mater and his employer.

“I strongly encourage fellow alumni to advocate for Tufts and Tufts students within their
firms,” Nelson says, underscoring the importance of community in
professional success. Through his work, Justin Nelson continues to make a
lasting impact on both JP Morgan and Tufts University.
