Nick Millican Believes London Is Making Great Progress by Releasing Households from Contracts That Double House Rents

An additional 500 households in London will be relieved from restrictive leaseholds deemed troublesome, as real estate expert Nick Millican explains. The ground rent they paid on these properties was set to double every ten to fifteen years. Notably, the contracts these households were bound to had issues. 

According to the competition watchdog, the ground rent of these houses, which eight different companies own, will now be restored to the amount it was when their dwellings were first sold, Nick Millican shares. He says that when news of this update reaches those affected, the nation will breathe a sigh of relief, knowing they are no longer in danger of fighting the exorbitant practice. 

This guarantees that more than 21,000 residences have been emancipated from what the Competition and Market Authority had earlier referred to as exceptionally serious leasehold strangulation since 2019. As Nick Millican adds, when people sign such onerous terms, they end up trapped in houses that are hard to sell. 

They may also find that falling behind on payments puts the right to keep their home at risk, Nick Millican shares. Last month, one London leaseholder reported that her freeholders were trying to take her home away from her after she refused to pay a bill that had risen from £600 to £5,500. 

A different leaseholder based in London informed Homes & Property that they are facing potential bankruptcy after having to pay nearly $7,000 in bills from their property management company within just six months. Therefore, Nick Millican states, this demonstrates that this relief will benefit multiple households.
