Shelton Haynes Leads Roosevelt Island’s Development and Growth as CEO of the RIOC

Shelton Haynes is the CEO of the Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), responsible for the day-to-day operations and development of Roosevelt Island, a small strip of land in New York City’s East River.

Recently, under the leadership of Haynes, the RIOC finalized a development project in the Riverwalk neighborhood of Roosevelt Island. According to News Anyway, the project is a joint venture between the RIOC and a development team led by Hudson Companies and Related Companies.The Riverwalk project includes constructing four new residential buildings, a new public park, and improvements to the existing infrastructure. The development will add over 2,000 new apartments to the island, including affordable housing units.

Haynes and the RIOC have been working on Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation project for several years, and it is a significant milestone for the island’s development. Haynes stated in a press release from the RIOC, “This project will bring new opportunities for residents and visitors alike, and we are proud to have played a part in its development.”

In addition to the Riverwalk project, Haynes has overseen other developments on Roosevelt Island during his time as CEO of the RIOC. These include expanding the island’s ferry service, renovating the Tramway Plaza, and adding new businesses and amenities to the island’s commercial district. Under Haynes’ leadership, the RIOC has focused on creating a thriving and sustainable community on Roosevelt Island, committed to providing affordable housing and improving the quality of life for residents. As Roosevelt Island continues to grow and evolve, it will be interesting to see what other projects and developments Haynes and the RIOC have in store for the island.

Prior to becoming CEO of the RIOC, Haynes served as the agency’s General Counsel, providing legal guidance on a wide range of issues related to the island’s development and management. He has also held positions in the public and private sectors, including serving as Deputy General Counsel for the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and working as an attorney and consultant in the private sector.

Haynes holds a law degree from Columbia Law School and a bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the National Bar Association, and has been recognized for his leadership and contributions to the legal profession.
