The Colcom Foundation and its impact

Perhaps you’ve never heard of the Colcom Foundation, but it might be of great interest to you.

Founded by Cordelia S. May, one of America’s wealthiest women, the foundation was created in 1966 and at that time, primarily funded by Ms. May. Now, of course, the foundation relies on donations, both small and large.

The primary reason Ms. May founded the Colcom Foundation was from her awareness of the dangers of overpopulation in the world at large and in the United States as well.

Her mother became aware of the dangers of overpopulation, following the work of Margaret Sanger, the famed evangelist for birth control.

Coupled with her love of the environment, and feeling that overpopulation, extreme examples of immigration policies, and poor environmental policies, Ms. May was convinced they all intersected.

The technical word for this intersection, that the Colcom Foundation supports, is called carrying capacity, and it’s not just something those in the foundation concocted out of thin air. There are tons of scientific articles, listed on their website, which indicate the human carrying capacity is limited. Particularly in countries like Bangladesh, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Noting that in the 1800s there were four billion people, and now that number has doubled to eight billion people, many parts of the world have already exceeded the carrying capacity of the people that can be supported. But the problems do not stop there. When a country even approaches its natural carrying capacity, the end result is mass immigration, much of it illegal, on a global scale.

One solution for counteracting such problems is of course birth control, which the foundation wholly supports.

Another solution, which Colcom Foundation supports actively, is support for the environment and maintaining wetlands and other natural preserves. MS. May lived in Pennsylvania and as a result, the foundation is most actively involved environmentally in Pennsylvania.

The Foundation understands the importance of protecting and connecting greenspace in southwestern Pennsylvania. To this end, they support projects such as Hollow Oak Land Trust, Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s Revolving Fund, WeConservePA and Westmoreland Land Trust.
