Colcom Foundation Sounds Alarm on “Sixth Mass Extinction”
Our planet Earth is currently in the process of what scientist’s call “The Sixth Mass Extinction”.
In a report that appeared recently in the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the authors compared the rapid disappearance of thousands of species of animals today to five previous known mass extinction events.
The last mass extinction occurred about 65 million years ago. It is known as the Cretaceous-tertiary extinction and was caused by the collision of a massive asteroid with the surface of Earth.
Today, humankind is causing the sixth mass extinction. Overpopulation and the use of fossil fuels which are loading the atmosphere with carbon to cause global warming are two major drivers. Other are deforestation, pollution, commercial overfishing of the oceans, overuse of pesticides and more.
The Colcom Foundation is sounding the alarm while also working diligently on programs to mitigate, slow down and possibly even reverse the rapid decline in the diversity of Earth’s complex biosphere.
The Colcom Foundation became fully funded in 1996. Since then, it has been working hard to raise awareness about how too many people on the planet are devouring all of its natural resources to fuel an endless cycle of economic growth that cannot be sustained.
The Colcom Foundation is also taking specific steps to create areas of environmental protection and sustainability in key areas. That includes establishing areas of permanent “green” and/or forestation to prevent commercial development from devastating these patches of nature that provide habitat for animals.
Other projects include projects to limit human population growth. As part of that, the Foundation would like to reduce immigration into the United States. Foundation literature says 88% of U.S. population growth is the result of immigration.
The Colcom Foundation also supports stewardship projects, sustainable economic development models, waste reduction projects, youth conservation programs and more. Refer to this article for more information.
