Gino Pozzo: The Secret Behind Watford Club’s Success
With the Pozzo Family’s long-time ownership of football clubs and their success in turning around clubs that are not high-performing, it’s no surprise that Gino Pozzo took a fourth division Club and turned it into a top-tier premier league club.
The Pozzo family, a long-time woodworking family, decided to purchase the Udinese Calcio Football Club—the football club of their hometown in Undine, Italy. The Pozzo family had a close relationship with the club as several family members were club presidents.
After the family bought Udinese Calcio football club, they purchased Granada football club, but Gino later sold the majority of shares in Granada FC to focus on Udinese Calcio and Watford FC. The Pozzo family had a great deal to do with the success of Udinese Calcio football club after they purchased it in 1986.
After Gino Pozzo graduated from Harvard, he lived for several years in Spain with his wife, but after 20, Gino and his family moved to London, one year later after the acquisition of the Watford Football Club. Gino Pozzo based his decision on a long-term plan he has for the current and future success of the Watford Club.
The Watford Club was purchased in 2012. Gino’s move to London allowed him to involve himself with the club’s operations. The move paid off in 2015, and the Watford Football Club went from a fourth-division club to a premier league club.
Though the Watford Club has had several coaches, it maintains a strong track record and continues to be a premier league club. Premier League football clubs are a million-dollar business, and the success of the Watford Club is due in part to Gino Pozzo’s recruitment-based business model. The Pozzo family frequently recruits and trades players from among their football clubs. This practice has received some criticism, but it has had a part in Watford’s current success.
