Raffaele Riva

Raffaele Riva is an Italian artist and illustrator specializing in the field of computer-generated art.

He worked for the video game developer Valve on “Half-Life 2” and “Portal.” At Valve, he started as a texture artist and later moved to concept art before being promoted to lead 3D character artist. In 2011, Riva left Valve to become an independent digital artist.

Raffaele Riva is widely known for his work in the computer-generated art industry. In particular, his work style is highly praised for its ability to simulate traditional watercolor paintings with 3D textures. His most recent works are digital paintings of animals like rabbits and wolves that have been adapted into LED lights by the creative company Mammal Motion Systems. One of these LED lights was displayed at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. in 2014.

Raffaele Riva received a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts with a focus on Computer Imaging from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, the United States, where he later taught and later joined Valve Software as a texture artist and concept artist, who were based in Bellevue, Washington – but later moved to Seattle – closing its office there to work remotely with employees around the world. In 2011 Riva left Valve to become an independent digital artist.

Raffaele Riva is one of the artists who worked on two bestsellers: “Portal” and “Portal 2”. He was credited for receiving the Excellence in Visual Arts Award for his work on “Half-Life 2” as a texture artist. He also received an Achievement Award from Valve. For his work on “Portal 2”, Riva received an Excellence in Visual Arts Award and an Achievement Award.

In 2009, Riva was sent to Japan by Valve to create art assets for its new game, “.” In 2011, he was hired at Valve again to work with Valve’s new game, “Portal 2”, by creating artwork such as textures, concept art and character design. Refer to this article for additional information.
